Michael Lennard

Chief of International Tax Cooperation, Financing for Development Office at the United Nations (UN) - Independent views  

 

Michael Lennard is Chief, International Tax Cooperation Section, Financing for Sustainable Development Office of the UN. His work focuses on ensuring the fairness and workability of international tax norms as a spur to sustained development, especially in the developing world. 

Michael Lennard was previously a tax treaty adviser in the OECD Tax Secretariat and leads, for example, the UN Secretariat work on taxation in an increasingly digitalized and globalized world. He has degrees from the University of Tasmania, the Australian National University and the University of Cambridge and is currently studying at the University of Oxford.

Prof. William Byrnes of Texas A&M University Law is the author of 15 annual Lexis, Kluwer, and Tax Facts books that have sold more than 180,000 print subscriptions and are accessed online 40,000 times annually. He pioneered online legal education in 1994, served as a Fulbright Expert, invited to teach and advise on the graduate education system in several countries, then founded Texas A&M's online international tax, wealth, and risk management graduate program curricula. Prof. Byrnes has served as an expert for government departments, financial institutions, and law firms. Before academia, he served in a senior international tax position with Coopers & Lybrand.

Dr. Susana Bokobo

Attorney General of The Supreme Court of Spain, and International Tax Lawyer at Susana Bokoko Ltd - Independent views  

Dr. Susana Bokobo is currently Legal Counsel (Attorney General) at the Supreme Court of Spain. Until January 2020, Ms Bokobo held the position of Global Tax Policies Deputy Director in the Tax Affairs Department of REPSOL (Spanish Energy company), leading the coordination and implementation of tax policy across various areas, including corporate tax, finance, research and development incentives and transfer pricing. A lawyer by training, in the context of policy issues in taxation, Ms Bokobo has also served as Tax Advisor for the Institute for Fiscal Affairs where she was involved in the Spanish Tax Reform of 2006 and formed part of the Ministry’s group of experts on European tax matter. She has also held academic positions at the Autonomous University of Madrid (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) as Associate Professor and as a visiting researcher at Harvard University, in both instances focusing primarily on tax law. She is an active member of the ICC Commission on Taxation and maintains co-operative relations with organizations such as the Organzation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United Nations, the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Mateo Jarrin Cuvi

During his 20-year career, Mateo Jarrin Cuvi has played important roles in a wide array of industries, eventually landing in the financial services sector where he has focused on content creation and management.

 

After dabbling in the oil and gas field, managing media relations for the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington DC, and working as a program manager for a Cypriot study abroad firm, Mateo served as Content Manager for Taxlinked, an international network for tax and law professionals, and Content Writer for FXPRIMUS, a Forex broker with a strong presence in southeast Asia. Today, he leads the charge for the International Governance and Compliance Association (IGCA) as Global Manager for Partners and Media.

 

Mateo holds a BA in Foreign Affairs and Latin American Studies from the University of Virginia (UVA) and an MA in Latin American Studies with a focus on Anthropology from the University of California in San Diego (UCSD). Plus, he’s a budding writer who has published fiction, food and wine articles, and other travel-related pieces in several local and global publications.

Dr. Blanca Moreno-Dodson

Director of the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI)

Dr. Blanca Moreno-Dodson is the Director of the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI), a partnership between multilateral development institutions, national governments, local authorities, and civil society, hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). Dr. Moreno-Dodson has over twenty-eight years of experience as a World Bank development economist. She authored and co-authored five books throughout her career including “Enhancing Mediterranean Integration” (CMI, 2020). She holds a Ph.D. as well as a Masters in International Economics and Finance from the University of Aix-Marseille, France, in addition to a Masters in Economics from the University Autonomous of Madrid, Spain.

Dr. George L. Salis is a recognised economist, lawyer, and tax professional, currently serving as Principal Economist and Tax Policy Advisor at Vertex, Inc., with over 28+ years of experience in international taxation and trade compliance, tax planning and controversy, fiscal regulation and tax economics consulting. He is responsible for analysis of economic, legal, financial, trade, and development issues in countries, as well as tracking and analyzing the rapid change in tax policies and regulations, and inter-governmental organizations, and tax administrations around the world.

 

George is also an adjunct professor of graduate tax law, and Transfer Pricing at Texas A&M University Law School, UF Levin College of Law, and other universities. George  holds a PhD in International Law & Economic Policy, an LLM in International Tax Law, an LLM (Hons) in International Taxation & Financial Services, and the LLB (Hons). He also earned an MA in Legal & Ethical Studies, and a BSc (Hons) in Economics, Political Science and Philosophy. He is the recipient of both the Advanced Certificate in EU Law, from the Academy of European Law, European University Institute, Florence, Italy, and the Executive Certificate in Economic Development, at the Harvard Kennedy School of Governmentand a Certified Business Economist (CBE)-designated by the National Association for Business Economics (US -NABE) Charter.

Prof. Franco Roccatagliata

Professor at the College of Europe

Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges since 2000. Mr Roccatagliata has been working for the European commission since 1994; first as a legal expert, then as member of Commissioner Monti's cabinet (1997-2003: MARKT, portfolio: free movement of persons and services; COMP, portfolio: State aid). He is currently principal administrator in DG TAXUD where he mainly deals with fiscal aspects of European companies, relationships between international tax agreements and EU law, and taxation aspects of EU policy for development. In this capacity, he is also the delegate of the EU Commission in various international tax committees (OECD-CFA, UN-DESA). He previously worked as a legal advisor at the International Department of the Italian Ministry of Finance (1984-1994) and as a tax inspector in local tax offices (1978-1984).

 

Mr. Roccatagliata (Law Diploma, 1982; Master in European Studies, 1986; Master in Business Administration, 1988) became a professor in law in 1987. He taught European and/or International tax law, as a visiting professor, at many European universities (Bocconi Milano, Roma I, Napoli II, Suor Orsola Napoli, Palermo, Deusto Bilbao, Barcelona, Lille II, Louvain). From 2000 to 2007 he has been in charge of the course of the European tax law at the University of Liège. He published several books and articles on international and EU tax law.

 

He is a member of various fiscal associations (IFA, ANDAF, EATLP), board of universities and scientific reviews (CeRTI/Bocconi, Diritto e Pratica Tributaria Internazionale).

Marios Siathas

During this time Marios has held numerous positions and, has managed and implemented large projects both locally and overseas. Marios has plenty of experience working with organizations and individuals and building specialised and unique learning and development solutions for them. He has managed several development projects for large and small companies in Cyprus, Egypt, Austria, Bahrain, Greece, Canada, China, Dubai, England, Germany, and South Africa. He holds a BSc in Marketing and Management, an MBA, and a Master in Adult Education and Training from Colorado State University.

 

He is a member of the board of the Institute of Directors (UK) Cyprus Branch and a member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI), member of the training and HR committee of the Cyprus International Funds Association (CIFA), the Cyprus Human Resource Managers Association, the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (ACAMS) and a host of other professional bodies.

Piergiorgio Valente

Prof. Piergiorgio Valente is the Founding and Managing Partner of Valente Associati GEB Partners / Crowe Valente.

 

Professor Valente covers key roles at the national, international, and supranational level, as President of CFE Tax Advisers Europe (2017-present), as chairman of the Technical Committee of the International Association of Financial Executives Institutes (IAFEI), as Member of the Business at OECD (BIAC) Committee on Taxation and Fiscal Policy, as chairman of the Global Tax Advisers Platform, and as Member of BUSINESSEUROPE’s Tax Policy Working Group, among others.

He has acquired extensive and specialized experience (almost 30 years) within the various areas of international tax, tax litigation, tax strategy, and tax control.

 

Professor of EU Tax Law as well as Tax and Financial Planning at the Link Campus University in Rome and Adjunct Professor of Taxation of Multinational Enterprises at the Faculty of Political Studies and for the Superior European and Mediterranean Education “Jean Monnet” of the University “Luigi Vanvitelli” in Naples. He also advises Governments on national and international tax issues.

Prof. Valente is the author of 14 Manuals, co-author of 30 Volumes. Over 500 Articles published in Italy and abroad.

Dr. Monica Calijuri Sionara

Monica Calijuri (PhD in Accounting, Sao Paulo University, and a B.A. in Economics). Lead Sector Specialist in tax administration at the InterAmerican Development Bank (IADB). She specializes in modernizing tax administration in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries through capacity building and digitalization. Previously, she worked for the Brazilian Tax Administration and the IMF.

Dr. Venetia Argyropoulou

General Counsel & Data Protection Officer at Kape Technologies

Dr. Venetia Argyropoulou is a Tax Law Lecturer at International University of Thessaloniki, a Post Doc Researcher at the University of Cyprus and an Extramural Fellow at Tilburg University Law and Economic Centre (TILEC) . She has been teaching tax law for the past 10 years in various Universities, including European University of Cyprus, Lund University, South Wales University and University of West London. She is also practicing the law and is the General Counsel of KAPE TECHNOLOGIES PLC. She represents Greece and Cyprus in various international organizations, like the IBFD, Tax Analysts, IBA’s Taxes Committee, the World Bank’s Women, Business and the Law Initiative, OECD's Social Institutions and Gender Index and the Observatory for Taxpayers’ Rights. Furthermore, she is listed in the European Court of Auditor’s list of Experts in Financial Law and she is the nominated Independent Person  under Directive EE 2017/1852 for the dispute resolution of intra-EU tax matters. She has a wide number of publications  in esteemed journals, including Harvard Journal of Human Rights, Washington International Law Review etc.

Alison Ring

Director, Public Sector & Taxation, ICAEW

Alison joined ICAEW in 2020 as the Director of the Public Sector team, which supports members working in and with the public sector to deliver public priorities and sustainable public finances. ICAEW engages with policy makers, public servants and others to promote the need for effective financial management, audit and assurance, financial reporting and governance and ethics across the public sector to ensure public money is spent wisely.

 From September 2021 Alison is also the Director of the Tax team. The tax team leads on being the professional and public interest voice of ICAEW in the field of tax and maintains and enhances the reputation and status of ICAEW by improving the tax system through engagement and making representations to governments and the revenue authorities. It supports ICAEW members practising tax and upholds high standards of technical competence and ethics by creating and publishing high quality resources that help members to be regarded by the public, policymakers and society at large as trusted advisers in the field of tax.

(After completing a law degree and qualifying with a medium-sized accountancy firm, she worked in practice for several years before joining HMRC/Ministry of Tax in 1994. She spent 25 years there where she held the post of Commissioners’ Advisory Accountant.)

Demetra Constantinou

Ms. Constantinou is a qualified Accountant and a Fellow member of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (FCCA), as well as, a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC) and International Tax Affiliate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT).  Ms. Constantinou is a holder of an Undergraduate Degree in Public & Business Administration from the University of Cyprus, of ADIT (Advanced Diploma of International Taxation) Qualification with specialisation in EU VAT Law and of CYSEC’s Advanced Certificate in Financial Services Legal Framework. 

Ms. Constantinou’s main areas of practice are Accounting and VAT Consultancy for local and international clientele, as well as, General Tax Advisory Services for EU based clients on various EU tax matters relating to VAT Law and Blockchain consulting services on Tax and VAT aspects. She is also a certified “Trainer of Vocational Training” by the HRDA.
